Managed care is defined as "a system that integrates the financing and delivery of appropriate medical care by means of the following features: contracts with selected physicians and hospitals that furnish a comprehensive set of health care services to enrolled members, usually for a predetermined monthly premium; utilization and quality controls that contracting providers agree to accept; financial incentives for patients to use the providers and facilities associated with the plan; and the assumption of some financial risk by doctors, thus fundamentally altering their role from serving as an agent for the patientís welfare to balancing the patientís needs against the need for cost control" (John Englehart, former editor of The New England Journal of Medicine).

Managed care pharmacy is defined as the promotion of wellness and rational drug therapy by the application of managed care principles. - From AMCP (the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy).

Pharmacists who work in this field are employed by HMOs, PBMs, and other managed care organizations. These pharmacists provide direct patient care, monitor patient outcomes to determine which therapies are most effective, design and manage pharmacy benefits, and organize, support, and participate on pharmacy and therapeutics committees to establish the types of drugs used by their organizations.  From the ASHP managed care pharmacy website.
