|Internet pharmacy is one of the more controversial areas of employment for pharmacists in the United States. In reality, there are very few true "internet pharmacists". Most prescriptions filled from internet orders, if U.S. based, are contracted out to licensed independent or mail order pharmacies. A few pharmacies are true "web only" pharmacies, and they employ pharmacists who fill prescriptions, answer drug information questions, and correspond and interact with both patients and physicians on a regular basis. |
The largest internet pharmacies are actually "mail order" pharmacies. Most third party insurance plans and prescription insurance providers operate internet pharmacies, and many require their plan participants to utilize these services. They employ hundreds of pharmacists at various locations nationwide. All the major drug chains operate internet pharmacies as well. Patients can enter prescription refill information in their computer, and pick up their prescriptions at their local chain location.
